Endodontic Microsurgery

It’s possible that a nonsurgical root canal procedure won’t be enough to save your tooth and, in some cases, your endodontist will recommend endodontic microsurgery. This procedure can identify small fractures on the surface of the root, eradicate persistent infection, or clean out canals that were previously inaccessible or undetected during the initial treatment.

Endodontic Microsurgery Procedure

Your endodontist performs micro-surgical procedures by first making you comfortable with local anesthesia. They will open the gum tissue near the tooth, exposing the underlying bone, and then remove any inflamed or infected tissue around the root. The very tip of the root is also removed. A small seal is placed at the end of the root canal and a few stitches or sutures are placed in the gums to help the tissue heal. Over the next few months, the bone will heal around the end of the root. Post-surgical discomfort is so mild that most patients return to their usual activities the next day.
